Perhaps one of the most powerful and genre-versatile songs for Good Friday is "Were You There?" I've heard and sung it as part of a classical choir, and I've also accompanied a Gospel singer on the piano for this song as well. The chord progression is straight-forward, but I believe it's better if a church worship team could pull off 1) a choir a cappella (as used in Phil Vischer's What's in the Bible? or b) the passion of a Gospel singer.
Three notable renditions: Peguero Sisters, Marion Williams, and Johnny Cash.
